2014 Holiday Letter

Coziest holiday greetings to all of you, our beloved family and friends!

We hope thus far the Christmas season has been wondrous and inspiring for all of you.  As usual, we are enjoying the shopping, baking, singing and all the other merry things which lead up to our favourite holiday celebration.  It has been a lovely year, even if it did speed right by us!

Jordan is blossoming at Children’s Hearing and Speech Centre of BC (CHSC) and is now in kindergarten.  Little by little, he is coming out of his shell and making friends.  He benefits greatly from one-on-one speech therapy sessions and an occupational therapist visits him once a week.  We are very pleased to say Jordy is learning to read, and each night brings home a simple reader for practice.  The fare is bland (“Up in a tree, what do I see?  I see a dog and it sees me,”) but we are just tickled that he is reading it aloud to us with minimal help.  We look forward to when he starts bringing home books with a little more character development and denouement to hone his new skills.   He loves music and often upon hearing a song new to him on the radio will request that one of us put that song on his iPod Nano.  His current jam is Joan Jett’s “I Love Rock ‘n Roll.”  He has also taken up the hobby of balloon twisting and can whip up a wacky balloon hat all on his own (he needs helping tying off the balloons,) his other creations like dogs and horses tend more toward abstract interpretation.

Our sweet Cygni is now three.  She isn't completely potty trained yet, so she won’t go to pre-school until next year, but we are keeping her busy and stimulated in dance class and attending strong-start a couple of times a week.  She has recently graduated from dance class that parents sit-in on, to one where parents wait outside for their kids.  She is transitioning fairly well, though she will sometimes run outside for a quick hug or kiss.  She loves to dance and has the cutest little bum-wiggle ever!  She will be starting swim lessons with Jordan in January.

Chris has been super busy with work!  His job changed again this year, however it’s one of those situations where he needs to define his own role and title, but he’s been too busy doing the job to stop and pick a title.  He is on a team that is using data and advanced analytics to help make better business decisions.  Don’t feel sorry for him… he thinks it’s fun.  In his new role he won’t travel as much, but he did go back to Romania in June for a whirlwind 3 days.  For fun outings Chris, surprisingly, chose football.  The day we confirmed our September vacation in Oregon was bonus payout day at Electronic Arts so Chris bought two row-3 seats to the Oregon Ducks vs. Michigan State Spartans and got to witness a fantastic 2nd-half comeback by the Ducks with Stuart Leaton.  Then in November Chris went to the Canadian Football League championship game, The Grey Cup.  Though his beloved BC Lions weren’t in the game, he had a lot of fun seeing how far some fans go to dress up for this game.

I am still heavily involved with my book club, Winey Readers, and we are approaching our two year anniversary in January!  I have made some good friends and funny memories, shared some delicious food and wine, and had some lively discussions about great books.  I look forward each month to my time off from being Mommy (even if nearly all the members wind up swapping Mommy War Stories at some point in the evening!)  In the spirit of trying something new, and making sure I exercised my brain a bit, I started ukulele lessons in January!  I have wanted to learn to play an instrument for my own enjoyment for a very long time. I had a great teacher who saw me every Monday until September and he got me through some uke basics and taught me to pick and strum some of my favourite songs like “Stand By Me,” “Brown Eyed Girl,” and  even “Here Comes The Sun.”  I had to drop lessons in September as I really wanted to send Jordy to swim lessons and couldn’t really do both, but I have fair renditions of “Jolly Old St. Nicholas” and “The Dreidel Song” going for the holidays.  Stretch yourself, try something new, it’s never too late!  And finally, I got to check an item off my bucket list this fall and saw Sir Elton John perform at Rogers Arena!  It was a rollicking show and he rocked for 2 ½ hours, what a thrill for me!

We have been up to our eyeballs with renovations, yet again!  This time we finally tackled those ugly beasts - our carport and electrical room.  I can barely begin to convey just how rickety, rotting, mouldy, soggy, they were and the electrical panel was a fire hazard that any fire chief would shudder to discover!  From enquiries to project completion, this odyssey spanned eight months!  It took a few run-arounds with the strata corporation, the city, and a structural engineer, but glory-be: we finally have a safe carport, electrical room, new cedar siding where it was required and a fresh lick of paint over the whole house.  We are now broke and are staying away from major renovation projects for at least two years!  Some happy homeowner luck came our way though in May, when Nanny Mary and her husband Charlie came to stay with us for a couple of weeks: Charlie volunteered to build us a new back yard deck!  He whipped it up in less than a week and it is beautiful!  We have enjoyed entertaining on it thus far.  In fact, we had a fun deck-warming with our third annual Beer Fest!  It was great to have some returning attendees and new neighbours to come and share in the swilling of the brew!  We managed to find time in July to make our annual pilgrimage to Osoyoos which has quickly become a favourite holiday spot for all of us!  Jordy loves splashing in the warm lake and was in the water by 8:30 some mornings!  Cygni prefers to build sand sculptures on the beach and we old folks like dropping by local wineries and tasting our way along the Golden Mile.  In early September we vacationed in Oregon, visiting family and friends in Eugene.  We held our annual picnic in Emerald Park and it was lovely to see all my old school and work friends and see how much all their kids have grown since our last picnic.  Then after a few days there we headed out to Winchester Bay on the Coast to stay a few nights in deluxe yurt at Umpqua Lighthouse State Park.  We loved the yurt and we got the most spectacular warm sunny days to spend on the beach, making sand castles, flying kites and watching the sun set!  We will definitely return to this amazing beauty spot.

All in all, it has been yet another fantastic year.  Sure, it has had its trials, but looking back now it is very easy to see how fortunate we have been and just how much joy we have found with one another.  I thank you for letting me write this letter to you year after year so that I can take stock of all the things for which I ought to be thankful.  And that, of course, circles us back to the subject of this most wonderful time of year when we count our blessings, hold close the ones we love and strive toward peace and love for our fellow man.  Happy Holidays to you and yours!
