A late bid for the Bad Dad of the Year award.

Yes, this is a rare post from guest-writer, The Big Dumer.  Wanted to share with you all my last-minute application for the Bad Dad of the Year award.

After our late morning trip to the pool, Jordan didn't want a nap so Dad took him on some errands.  Jordan likes going to the store and we had to get some bread.  We had another errand to run in New Westminster first, and Jordan snoozed as we drove out there.  After parking, Dad had to juggle an extra set of keys, envelope, sunglasses, iPhone, iPod etc.  Not that having to juggle a bunch of stuff is an excuse but it was a contributing factor.

The problem is that once I got out of the car, I realized that the car was locked...with the keys and Jordan inside.

Jordy was safe in his car seat so I quickly ran into the building and did my errand.  When I got back to the car, Jordan was still in his car seat playing an iPhone game.  One thing about Jordan is that he loves to pretend to drive the car so I went by the driver's window and waived to Jordan, "You want to drive the car?  Unbuckle and come up front!"  This worked perfectly and within 30 seconds Jordan was in the driver's seat.

Next step: get him to unlock the door.  Shouldn't be too hard.  So I yell, "Jordan, can you press the button?" as I point at the door unlock button.  No good...he puts some spare change in the little coin drawer.  I know that Jordan likes to press the buttons on the key, maybe I can get him to press the unlock button there.  Note: this was a bad idea.

"Jordan, can you get the key?"  Jordy smiles and picks up the key...and promptly PUTS IT IN THE IGNITION AND TURNS IT.  I didn't know he knew how to do that.  Apparently he has been watching.  Fortunately he only got it to the second position, because after turning the key he started trying to move the gear shifter.  By this point I have picked up a brick and I'm actually thinking that I might have to smash the window of my car to prevent my 3-year old from driving in the parking lot.

I try to get his attention away from the shifter and the key, so I go back to "Jordan - can you press the button!" but he goes back to the little coin drawer.  "No, Jordan, press the button on the door!"  And fortunately when he heard the word "door" he smiled and...opened the door.  Crisis averted.

On the way home we did go to the grocery store (which was penance for my Bad Dad act - that place was crazy and Jordan didn't make it any easier) and I bought Jordan a big bag of Jelly Belly jelly beans.

While you are contemplating whether or not my Dad privileges should be revoked, here is some video of Jordan wishing everyone a safe and happy New Year:

For all of our loyal readers, wherever you may be, we wish you a safe and happy New Year!
