Another Busy Week

What a week! We have accomplished a lot, and it is not even over yet!

The house is painted at last! Scratch one big item off the list. There was some rotten wood on the north side which made for a much larger scraping job for the painter; all in all, it took an entire week to get the house finished. Just a few little messes to clean-up (getting the mail box etc back on, clearing out some scraping leavings the painters missed, etc.) and, cosmetically speaking, we can forget about the exterior of our house for a while.

In addition to getting the house painted, we have been shopping for a new car. Yes, we will be trading in Deb's old hooptie for a brand-spanking-new 2010 Toyota Matrix. The folks at the dealership called yesterday to tell us the one we wanted is in. We were going to try to pick it up right away, but we have now decided to add the window tinting and so we'll go pick it up on Saturday morning! Hooray! The old Skylark has been pretty good to us, but it is starting to nickle'n'dime us to death. For the safety of the Little Dumer we’ve decided it is time to splash out on a new vehicle. We’ll post some photos after we pick it up this weekend.
Is anyone else imagining a Monty Burns-esque eeeeeeex-cellent...?

Jordan is discovering his hands

We got to meet our SLP (Speech Language Pathologist,) Ayasha yesterday too. She came by the house, met Jordy and got to know us and determine from that how we should start out our weekly visits. We have decided to learn some sign language, a vocabulary that will help Jordan to express himself before he learns to speak, and take our cue from him later on whether or not to continue to sign as a regular mode of communication. It is probable that once Jordan is talking we won’t need to sign any more, but in noisy situations it may be helpful to have that extra means of communication available. We were planning on learning sign even before we knew that Jordan had a hearing loss, so this doesn’t seem like too much of a stretch for us. Though I do admit, now that my learning it is less about a progressive way of parenting and more about truly facilitating my son’s communication I suddenly feel self conscious as to whether this old dog is capable of learning a new trick or two. Ayasha taught us to sign Mommy, Daddy and I Love You before she left. And I had picked up Sleep and Eat from the ASL book Janice left with us a few weeks ago. Besides that, we learned a variety of animal words from a DVD/Book combo we have from Baby Signs. Chris’ favourite sign from that is Turtle, while I am partial to Cat myself, as I am able to use it every time Smokey cruises by. We’re on our way it seems.

Chris had decided last minute to take the day off not only to be present to meet our SLP, but also because we looked at the forecast and the last day of decent weather before Labour Day was yesterday and we had yet to go to the Fair at the PNE (Pacific National Exhibition for you non-BCers.) So after Ayasha’s visit we packed up the kiddo and all the accoutrements that come with him and headed to the Fair. I thought we would only be able to hang out for two or three hours because of the little guy but he was so good, we spent 7 hours there! He napped in the stroller and we fed him when he needed it and the outing was just great! I am starting to feel better about long outings with him, especially after yesterday.

Someone loves his Daddy!

The Carlaw Clydes -- Jordan seemed to love watching these horses, he'd follow them with his eyes as far as he could as they rounded our corner.

Sneaking in a snuggle before the Mounties Musical Ride.

We took him to the see the RCMP (Mounties) Musical Ride, the Super Dogs Show, and the Farm Animals. We walked along the midway and through the exhibits and ate all kinds of unhealthy food. It was a feast for the senses, in fact, it was so noisy we took his hearing aids out after a short time because it seemed to be a little too much for him.

We were disappointed that our favourite old Brahma Bull, Peter wasn't at the fair this year and hope he has simply retired from traveling, rather than perhaps having met some other fate. Too bad, Jordy, that bull has nothin' on Peter!

If the kiddo knew what a sno-kone was he wouldn't look so sad to be sitting in front of a stand that sells them!

Part-way through eating my Whale's Tail I looked down and noticed Jordan was lightly dusted with cinnamon and sugar!

The whole day was a ton of fun, but I couldn’t help imagining what it will be like in a year when Jordan will understand more of what he is seeing, be able to touch the animals and ride some kiddy rides! Oh, is Mommy ever excited for that!
