I've been asked a few times why we chose the name "Jordan"?
The answer is that after our wedding I did a lot of research into the Dumaresq family name and my family tree.
I stopped researching once I made a link to the Brith Royal family because at that point all the royal families inter-marry and it gets out of control.
A statistical model for ancestry shows that 80% of all people living 2000 years ago are related to 100% of the people now alive while the other 20% are related to NOBODY as their lines died out. So everyone now alive is related to royalty...the only problem is that most people can't find the link.
So going far back felt like a waste. There were other cool stories. The ancestor who fought at the battle of Hastings in 1066. The tale of the Protestant Dumaresqs getting kicked out of France and becoming a prominent family onthe island of Jersey in the Channel Islands. Or the Dumaresq whose son left for the new world and found a place he liked so much that he named it "New Jersey" after his home.
OK but what about Jordan? Well he is simply the oldest recorded Dumaresq! "Jordan Du Maresq" is recorded in the Exchequer of some British king in 1320. Somewhere in our crawlspace is a drawn family tree where you can trace father-to-son from me all the way to the original Jordan. I guess I need to add a new row!
What about "Ross" you ask? Well I am Christopher Ross; my Dad was Cameron Ross and his father was Clement Ross. Yes, clever observers will notice that we broke the string of "CRD" initials. We tried but just couldn't find the right name. Conrad. Connor. Nothing beat out Jordan which had been our list for 3 or 4 years.
What about discarded middle names? The truth is that he was very nearly "Jordan Axel". My mom's reaction to that was "Axels are on cars." Ross won out because we might not have another son and we wanted to preserve the name Ross.
