1 cm

Before sitting down at the keyboard to draft our latest blog entry I decided to take a look at a ruler we keep handy at the desk, you know, for a little inspiration. One centimeter really isn't much - if you don't have a measuring implement nearby, it's about the width of a pinky finger. I had my weekly prenatal check-up and that is how wide my cervix is dilated, I've also been told, it's "nice and soft." The really mind blowing mental leap for me is that a fully dilated cervix should open up to about 10 cm, sounds like a nice number, doesn't it? But looking down at the ruler again 10 cm really doesn't look that impressive, I have to say!

At any rate, the news is that we are on our way to early labour, though I would be remiss to allow anyone to believe that this baby is coming tomorrow or anything like that; a gal can be dilated to one or two cm for days or even weeks. As my doctor is concerned, based on the "Little" Dumer's size, that baby won't engage and drop down she suggested that she go ahead and strip the membranes ( http://www.gynob.com/stripmem.htm ) in an effort to encourage labour and keep the Little Dumer from going too far overdue and getting even bigger. It can be a little hit or miss, but I told her to go ahead and take a crack at it. Poor Chris, when I called him shortly after and gave him the update, his collar sounded a little tight. Even though he is mentally ready for a baby, he has a lot of stuff at work to wrap up and I don't think he is sure it will be wrapped up nicely before he has to help me with my breathing technique.

And thus Chris'n'Deb head into the very last weekend that we are not scheduled to be parents! It's pretty exciting! We'll be BBQing for sure.
