Closing out 2009

Happy New Year everyone! A lot of people are ragging on 2009, but it was a good year for the Dumaresq family, we have the Little Dumer and we don't think it can get much better than that. Thanks for bearing with us as we took a little break from blogging, it was a very busy Holiday season, but also a heartwarming one. We hope you can say the same.

We all (Nanny included) made our journey south to Oregon so that Jordan could meet some friends and family. We were a trifle concerned about how Jordy would handle an 8+ hour roadtrip, but he actually hung in pretty well for us. Our strategy was to take frequent breaks and alternate who sat in back with the little dude so that he wouldn't get bored and that served us pretty well. We hit a brief period of crabbiness just after we got through Portland; it was Friday rush-hour, the 1-5 was moving very slowly and we had been on the road for most of the day -- Jordan had pretty much had enough. We pulled off for about a half hour, nursed and calmed him but as soon as we got in the car he was in tears again. We rode it out for ten minutes 'til he cried himself to sleep. Luckily we were not far from my Aunt and Uncle's place in Keizer and just as he was waking up we pulled into their driveway. It was good to get out of the car and have a snack, a stretch and a visit. We left Mary there and then got on the road to Eugene. Jordy slept through that too. We worried that with so much car sleep he wouldn't do well that night, but he slept as he always does.

Auntie Sue actually volunteered to change a diaper!

It was so wonderful to see Jordan meeting beloved friends like Auntie Tricia, Auntie Crystal, Uncle Clinten and my brother, Uncle Tommy for the first time. When it was all over the drive back was even better! We made excellent time, the little man didn't give us any guff at all, and we even got home before dark. Of course, the next day was all about getting ready on short notice for Christmas and Boxing Day, and Mommy and Daddy were starting to get sick, but the point is we couldn't have done any better for the drive home!

Wishing Uncle Tommy a Happy 25th Birthday!

We didn't have much time to rest before it was Christmas Eve. Nanny came over to stay for the next few days and that night we did something very Christmassy and went ice skating at the rink at Robson Square. We weren't allowed to take Jordy on the ice but he still found it amusing to watch us pass by his spot at the rail. Daddy did so with more grace and panache than Mommy and Nanny, but fun was had by all. And afterwards hot chocolates were had by all before we headed home to wait for Santa!

Everyone asks how Jordan liked Christmas morning, but to be perfectly honest he doesn't really get it yet. We were able to get him to tear at the wrapping of a gift or two, and he chewed on his fair share of them, but we're looking forward to Christmas 2010, as we think he'll have a bit more of a sense of Ooh, gift for me! Still, he made out like a bandit this year! After gifts we headed to Mark and Aida's for a yummy turkey dinner.

This was the first New Year's Eve in many years that Chris and I didn't go out, we had a nice quiet evening at home and watched Inglourious Basterds while the little man slept. We paused the flick to open up some sparkling wine, count down to 2010, have a sip and a kiss and then watched some of the fireworks set off by the neighbours -- all in our jammies! Now that is a happy New Year.
